Modern low poly look with a striking magenta and blue color palette

For an image film produced for TU Ilmenau, we visualized connected and autonomous driving in urban environments on behalf of a film production company. The core focus was a seamless transition from real drone footage into a stylized 3D world.

Based on real building data and digitized test vehicles such as a distinctive VW T5, a low poly animation was created in magenta and blue. It makes invisible data streams, sensor fusion, and V2X communication between vehicles and smart infrastructure visually tangible at a real intersection.

The Challenge: Making invisible sensors visible in harmony with real drone footage

The greatest challenge of this project lay in the seamless interaction between live action footage and computer animation. In the image film, viewers were intended to see the real intersection in Ilmenau from a birds eye view first, before the picture transitions smoothly into a digital realm. Since modern sensor data, radio signals, and 5G connections cannot be seen with the naked eye, a visual translation was needed that feels immediately clear.

To ensure the transition works completely smoothly in the edit, we had to replicate the flight path of the drone, the camera perspective, and vehicle speeds precisely inside 3D software. Every single camera angle had to match the real road situation millimeter for millimeter so that the shift appears completely seamless to the eye.

The Solution: From real geographic data to a customized 3D scene

To rebuild the intersection in Ilmenau true to original scale, we downloaded real 3D building data and refined it carefully. The vehicle fleet was also crafted with great attention to detail. Alongside the research shuttle, we modeled a VW T5 matching the exact custom wrap of the real test vehicle.
Thanks to the chosen low poly look, distracting details stepped into the background, focusing viewer attention entirely on what matters. Striking signal paths in vivid magenta and blue ultimately show at a single glance how vehicles, traffic lights, and sensors exchange data continuously.

Video production execution - 2024

The Result: Complex sensor technology integrated seamlessly into the image film

Through close alignment with the storyboard, a tailored 3D sequence was created that integrates smoothly into the real drone shots of the film production. Instead of dry theory, the finished film shows at a single glance how autonomous vehicles and smart infrastructure communicate with each other via modern sensors.

TU Ilmenau and the involved research institute use the animation in their image film to present their forward looking research clearly during presentations, at trade fairs, and online. Even complex V2X data streams become immediately understandable for external audiences and project partners thanks to the clean low poly style.

The custom built 3D scene of the Ilmenau intersection and the detailed vehicle models also provide a solid foundation for the future. Whenever new research findings or additional scenarios emerge, extra sensor functions or traffic situations can be added flexibly at any time.

The outcome for our client

  • Seamless transition from drone flight to 3D world
  • Core visual highlight for the TU Ilmenau image film
  • Clear visual explanation of V2X sensor data
  • Engaging presentation for conferences and trade shows
  • Versatile use in public relations and academic teaching
  • Effective visualization for industry and research partners
  • Flexibly expandable 3D environment for follow up projects

Precise reconstruction of the real intersection environment

To make the transition from real drone recordings into computer animation entirely credible, the highest precision was required when digitally rebuilding the town. We downloaded real geographic data and 3D models of existing buildings from public directories. Afterward, we processed these raw assets and adapted them to the actual street conditions in Ilmenau.

Through this exact calibration, road layout, building distances, and camera angles matched the live action film down to the millimeter. This created a reliable digital twin of the intersection as an ideal foundation for the subsequent sensor animation.

The storyboard as the foundation for the 3D animation

Prior to the actual animation process, a detailed illustrated storyboard was created. Here, the camera perspectives of the real drone flights, vehicle routes, and sensor overlays were aligned frame by frame. This gave everyone involved a very clear understanding of how the seamless blend from the real intersection into the digital 3D space would look in the finished film.

Timing, camera framing, and storytelling elements could be refined flexibly during this early stage, well before demanding render passes began. The storyboard served as a reliable guide for the entire team, ensuring efficient and trouble free production throughout.

Gallery: Insights into the 3D models and sensor technology

The following images show selected scenes from the 3D animation created for the TU Ilmenau image film about autonomous driving and V2X connectivity. Featured are the digital recreation of the real intersection, the authentically wrapped VW T5, and the stylized data communication in a low poly look. These snapshots demonstrate how invisible sensor data flows and smart mobility solutions are clearly communicated using distinctive colors and clean geometry.

Why 3D animation is the key to explaining sensor technology

Modern sensor systems often remain invisible during real world operation. Through targeted 3D animation, we turn complex processes such as sensor fusion, lidar and radar coverage, and uninterrupted 5G data transmission into concepts that are understood right away. Prospective industrial clients quickly recognize how their components interact with IoT traffic signals and vehicles to guide connected mobility safely.

Strong visuals transform abstract hardware and software products into persuasive sales arguments. At trade shows, in client discussions, or directly on your website, clear animations build genuine trust and lasting interest for demanding engineering solutions.

Faithful 3D adaptation of the wrapped VW T5 test vehicle

To ensure maximum recognition within the image film, we acquired a detailed 3D model of a VW T5. We remodeled this base vehicle digitally and tailored it precisely to the real vehicle used by TU Ilmenau. The distinctive vehicle wrap, specific colors, and specialized accessories of the real test bed were transferred onto the 3D geometry with millimeter precision.

Thanks to this accurate recreation, the transporter fits into the overall scene naturally during final video editing. Audiences immediately identify the authentic research vehicle, lending the entire image film strong visual authenticity.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about 3D animation for sensor technology and autonomous driving

Why is 3D animation especially effective for sensor technology and autonomous driving?

Sensor types such as radar, lidar, ultrasonic devices, and 5G signals remain invisible to the human eye. A 3D animation makes signal pathways, detection zones, and vehicle to infrastructure communication visually tangible. Even highly complex physical interactions can be explained to prospective customers, investors, and project partners within seconds.

Can 3D animations be combined with real drone or camera footage?

Yes, that is one of our central specialties. By matching camera movements and reconstructing the physical surroundings in 3D, the virtual space can be aligned with real video clips accurately. This creates a smooth transition between actual street footage and digital data layers, giving the completed film a refined, high end finish.

What information is required to model vehicles and surroundings?

We work from reference photos, design plans, CAD models, or real geographic data of the target area. For unique test vehicles, we customize existing 3D vehicle geometries using photos to match specific liveries and hardware wraps. For streets and buildings, we utilize public cadastral datasets or online sources to build an accurate digital twin.

Can completed 3D scenes be repurposed for future projects or updates?

Yes. Once a virtual environment and a vehicle fleet have been assembled in 3D, they can be expanded at any point. New sensor ranges, different street layouts, or additional road users can be integrated easily without starting from scratch. This saves considerable time and project budget over the long term.

What advantages do 3D animations offer industrial technology companies?

A 3D animation translates abstract engineering capabilities into memorable visual arguments. This noticeably reduces explanation effort in sales conversations. Furthermore, the animation yields versatile visual assets including exhibition videos, graphics for datasheets, and short video teasers for LinkedIn or YouTube.
