3D animations and 3D objects in real film

Real film footage supplemented with 3D elements

An image film of a pulp producer was shot in real film with a conventional camera. However, two scenes in the image film were intended to visually show future construction projects and expansions of the production facility. Visions of the future that do not yet exist. Difficult to show with a real camera. But thanks to 3D animation, 3D objects could be integrated into existing real film footage.

Video shot with the camera enhanced with 3D elements

In order to show the planned structural extensions in a real environment, 3D elements of buildings and production facilities were integrated into an existing video. The real video shows the environment and the facility as it currently exists. The future planned construction phases are displayed using 3D animation. These 3D elements are animated and build up one after the other on the surrounding properties.

Implementation of video production - 2024

Drone video as a starting point

The starting point was footage taken with a drone. The drone video shows the facility in a slow flight. This gives a very good true connection to the current situation on site. It would be possible to model all of this in 3D, but it would involve a lot of effort. So not everything always has to be in 3D.

3D models of a production facility

What wasn't there, however? The planned production facility as it should look in the future. For this purpose, 3D models were created that show the halls, buildings, silos, tanks, pipelines and conveyor systems. All 3D models are in a uniform style and fit together visually.

Consulting for 3D animation videos

Free initial consultation for 3D animation videos

Are you also looking for a 3D agency that can explain your technical product with a 3D animation video? But you don't yet know whether this will work for you and your product? The Animations-Maschine offers you a free initial consultation. Let's just talk about your product and project. Together we will work out an ideal solution for your project. You can then decide at your leisure whether you ultimately want to have a 3D animation or a video animation produced.

Motion Tracking / Capture Camera Movement

The real video can be read in and analyzed in the 3D program. Movement points of prominent points and thus the camera movement of the drone flight can be recorded. This allows the real video to be projected into a kind of 3D space. Camera calibrations such as perspective, focal length and distance can be determined and used for the 3D objects.

Merging of 3D model and real film

The previously created 3D models of the future production facility can now be placed and built in the 3D space in the 3D program. The visualization program knows the distances, places the 3D objects and shows the real film in the background. The exposure and shadows are adjusted and a composition of a real film with 3D elements is ready.

CAD model into existing real-life video

In a second real-life video, already constructed CAD models of buildings were to be integrated. For this purpose, a second drone video was shot from a closer distance. The customer provided the CAD models, which were then imported, processed and textured. And then integrated and placed in the existing real video using the same principle.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Integrating 3D Animations into Real Film Footage

Why combine real video footage with 3D animations?

Combining real film footage with 3D elements allows technical information, invisible processes and product features to be visualized directly within a real environment. This creates a more realistic and engaging presentation than using either medium alone.

Can 3D objects be added to footage that has already been filmed?

Yes. Existing video footage can be enhanced with 3D models, animated graphics and visual effects. Through camera tracking and scene matching, virtual objects can be integrated so they appear naturally within the recorded environment.

What types of technical information can be visualized with 3D overlays in real film?

3D overlays can display hidden components, product dimensions, internal processes, flow directions, installation paths or technical data. This makes complex technical subjects easier to understand without interrupting the real-world context.

Can 3D animations be used to show products that do not yet exist physically?

Yes. Virtual products based on CAD data can be inserted into real environments before prototypes or production models are available. This enables marketing, sales and product launch activities to begin much earlier in the development process.

Is the combination of real film and 3D animation suitable for trade fairs and marketing campaigns?

Yes. Hybrid productions that combine real footage with 3D visualizations attract attention and communicate technical advantages effectively. They are frequently used for websites, social media, exhibitions, sales presentations and product launches.
